Pererenan is a village in Mengwi, Badung, at the western end of the Canggu coastline. Its beach is separated from Echo Beach by the Pererenan River. Canggu sits directly east, Munggu west, and Tumbakbayuh inland to the north.

Jalan Pantai Pererenan runs down to the beach and carries the neighbourhood along it.

Against Batu Bolong and Berawa, Pererenan is the quieter end of the same coastline. Go one village west into Munggu and Seseh and it gets quieter again, with the coast staying rural most of the way to Tanah Lot.

Property here is villas and land: riverside plots, rice-field plots, and houses set back on small lanes. The ground is flat and there are no cliffs on this stretch, so what you look out over is usually green.

Around Pererenan

Surf & beaches

Pererenan Beach

Black volcanic sand facing the Indian Ocean, with the car park at the end of the main road and open shoreline in both directions. The water is rarely calm and the swell arrives unbroken off the ocean, so it works better as a surf and sunset beach than a swimming one.

Pererenan Rivermouth

The right that runs off the river mouth at the eastern end of the beach, a long walling wave with barrel sections when the swell is clean. Southwest groundswell from about April to October, mid to high tide, and genuinely hazardous at low when the reef and rock come up. Solid intermediates and above.

Echo Beach

The next beach east, across the Pererenan River and technically inside Canggu. A reef break with a heavier left, and the closest busy beachfront you can reach on foot from Pererenan.

Seseh and Munggu beaches

The coast immediately west, both black sand and both quieter than Pererenan. Same ocean, same currents, fewer people, and the road behind them runs between rice fields for most of its length.

Eat & drink

Jalan Pantai Pererenan

The road down to the beach and the spine of the neighbourhood. Most of Pererenan's eating, drinking and shopping sits along it, which is why the area walks better than its size suggests.

See & do

Pura Gede Luhur Batu Ngaus

A sea temple perched on a boulder jutting into the water at Mengening Beach in Cemagi village, a short ride west along the coast. The same idea as Tanah Lot at a fraction of the scale and with far fewer people at sunset.

Tanah Lot

The offshore rock temple in Beraban, Tabanan, roughly 10 km up the coast. It sits on a sea stack you can only reach on foot at low tide, and it draws the biggest sunset crowd on this side of the island.

The rice fields along Jalan Raya Seseh

The road west out of the village runs with paddy on both sides, and it's the clearest picture of what this coast looked like before Canggu spread. It's still farmed, so the view changes with the planting cycle.

Why buyers look at Pererenan

Buyers look at Pererenan for the same reason renters do. The geography does that work: the coast is flat, the village is cut by waterways and paddy, and the built-up part runs along one road down to the beach instead of spreading across a grid.

We should be straight about our own position. Yolla builds and manages on the Bukit, so we come to Pererenan as an agency with listings there and not as an operator on the ground. Any rental figure we quote you comes from villas Yolla actually manages, which is why you won't get a Pererenan projection from us dressed up as local knowledge.

Who Pererenan suits

Surfers who've outgrown the learner beaches

The peaks off Pererenan Beach and the rivermouth suit intermediates and up, and they sit at the end of the street instead of a drive away. April to October is when the coast switches on. If you're still learning, the softer sand breaks around Batu Bolong are minutes east and better for it.

Long-stayers who want Canggu's supply without its density

Everything Canggu built is a short ride away, and the airport run stays under two hours in most conditions. Pererenan sits at the edge of that catchment, so the supply is close while the lanes stay quieter and greener. Anyone who wants to be in the middle of it should look at Berawa or Batu Bolong.

Buyers who want a village setting on flat ground

The land here is flat and green, which means river and rice-field frontage in place of cliffs and horizon views. Plots sit on small lanes among local houses, and life runs on a scooter. If a terrace over the ocean is the point of the purchase, that's the Bukit, not this coast.

Questions

Pererenan, answered

Where exactly is Pererenan?
Pererenan is a village in Mengwi district, Badung, at the western end of the Canggu coastline. Canggu borders it to the east, Munggu to the west, and Tumbakbayuh inland to the north. The Pererenan River runs down to the sea and separates Pererenan Beach from Echo Beach.
How far is Pererenan from the airport?
Around 20 km by road, which usually means 45 minutes to an hour and a half by car. Leave a wide window before a flight.
How is Pererenan different from Canggu?
It's the same coastline with less on it. Batu Bolong and Berawa are dense and busy, while Pererenan is lower, greener, and strung along one road down to the beach. It still sits inside Canggu's catchment, so anyone hoping for isolation should look further west to Munggu, Seseh or Cemagi.
Can beginners surf at Pererenan?
Not really. The peaks here break over a mix of sand, reef and rock and suit intermediates upwards, with the rivermouth right the most demanding of them. Learners on this coast do better at the softer sand breaks around Batu Bolong and come here once they can hold a line. The season is April to October on southwest groundswell with northeast offshore wind.
Can you swim at Pererenan Beach?
It's a surf and sunset beach. Anyone who wants flat water for children should be looking at Bali's east coast.
Is Pererenan walkable?
The stretch along Jalan Pantai Pererenan is, and you can walk the sand across to Echo Beach when the tide allows. Everything else means a scooter.
What kind of property is Pererenan known for?
Land plots and villas, generally low-rise, set on small lanes or against a river or a rice field. The ground here is flat, so ocean views are rare away from the beachfront and most of what you buy looks out over green.
How does Pererenan compare to Seseh and Munggu?
It's the built-up end of the same run of coast. Pererenan gives you more within walking distance. The villages west give you more quiet.
