Canggu is a stretch of Bali's southwest coast in North Kuta district, Badung regency, about 10 km northwest of Kuta and roughly 12 km from Denpasar. Around 10 km of beach runs from Berawa in the south, through Nelayan, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach, up to Pererenan, which crosses a river channel into Mengwi district.
The sand is dark grey to black, volcanic rather than the coral white of the Bukit, and the beaches are walk-on flat. The waves are sand and dead reef beach breaks, forgiving at Batu Bolong and Berawa and heavy at Echo Beach. No cliffs, no staircases, nothing to climb down.
Seminyak is about 20 minutes south and the built-up strip effectively carries on from there. Head the other way and the coast thins out past Pererenan and Cemagi toward Tanah Lot in Tabanan.
Around Canggu
Surf & beaches
The middle of the Canggu coast and the wave most people learn on. Multiple peaks break over sand and dead reef, slow and forgiving enough for longboards and surf schools, which also makes it the most crowded lineup along here. The rock outcrop and temple at one end give the beach its name.
The westernmost beach in Canggu proper, named Batu Mejan after the temple above it. The left off the rocks breaks harder and shallower than anything else on this coast and wants mid to high tide. Experienced surfers only; the sandbar peaks in front of the beach are the friendlier option.
The southern end of Canggu, closest to Seminyak. A beach break over sand and deeper reef with a defined channel, so the paddle out is easier than at Batu Bolong and the wave holds bigger swell better. Beginners work the inside, stronger surfers take the outside peaks.
Across the river channel west of Echo Beach, and administratively in Mengwi district rather than North Kuta. An A-frame with a better left than right, best around mid to high tide because the reef sits close to the surface as the water drains. Noticeably quieter than the beaches to the east.
The fishing beach on the Canggu coast (nelayan means fisherman). Outriggers pull up on the sand and the catch is sold straight off it, which is roughly what this entire shoreline looked like before the town arrived.
Eat & drink
The street running inland from Batu Bolong beach, and the spine of Canggu's eating and drinking. It has been the town's main strip since the surf crowd first settled here, and almost everything along it sits within a walk or a short ride of the sand.
See & do
A centuries-old temple on the rock outcrop at the end of Batu Bolong beach, attributed like Tanah Lot to the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. It's the fixed point on a beachfront that has changed around it, and the reason the beach and the street carry the name.
The sea temple on an offshore rock up the coast in Tabanan regency, past Pererenan and Cemagi. It's reachable on foot only at low tide, and it marks where the developed southwest coast gives way to open shoreline.

Who Canggu suits
Batu Bolong and Berawa break over sand and dead reef with multiple shifting peaks, which is about as forgiving as Bali gets. Dry season, roughly April to October, is the cleaner half of the year, though the coast picks up swell in every month. The trade is company: these are the busiest lineups on the island, and you'll be sharing every peak.
Canggu is dense. Shops, gyms, coworking, schools and restaurants sit within a few streets of each other, and you can run an ordinary week here without planning it around drives. Anyone whose ideal day ends with nobody in sight will be happier on the Bukit or on the coast north of Pererenan.
The Bukit puts every beach at the bottom of a cliff. Canggu's land is flat and low, so you walk or cycle onto the sand, and plots run back into rice fields instead of up a headland. The price of flat ground is elevation: very few Canggu villas see the ocean, and the view is usually paddy and sky.
