A wide run of grey-black volcanic sand with rice fields and palms directly behind it. A low cliff closes one end, with a small waterfall dropping off it fed by irrigation channels from the paddies above. Low tide pulls the water a long way out and exposes rock and coral patches.

A beach break with several shifting peaks working both left and right over sand with rock in places. Soft enough that surf schools push beginners into the inside whitewater, with the outer peaks holding shape for intermediates. Best mid to high tide, dry season roughly April to October, and best in the morning before the side-shore trades fill in.

A river estuary marks the end of the beach and separates it from the sand beyond. It shifts with the seasons and carries down whatever comes off the fields after heavy rain, so the water there runs cloudier than the rest of the bay in the wet months.

The black sand beaches between Kedungu and Tanah Lot, backed by the same rice country. Calmer and less surfed than Kedungu, and the stretch most people drive past on the way to the temple without stopping.

Further northwest along the Tabanan coast, another black sand beach with a break of its own and even less around it. Worth knowing as the direction the coast keeps going: quieter and more rural the further you drive from Canggu.

The sea temple on its own rock formation about 2 km down the coast, cut off by water at high tide and walkable at low. One of Bali's most visited landmarks, and the fixed point that gives this stretch of Tabanan coast its name on the map.

Inland from Kedungu the land climbs through subak-irrigated paddy toward Mount Batukaru. The Jatiluwih terraces, UNESCO listed and part of the same water-temple system, sit roughly 45 minutes up the road and are larger and higher than anything around Ubud.
