Padang Padang sits on the west coast of the Bukit, in Pecatu village, about 3 km down the coast from Bingin and a short drive north of Uluwatu Temple. The beach is a small cove of white sand under limestone cliffs, and you reach it on foot, through a cleft in the rock and down a stairway narrow enough that people go single file.
The name carries further than the beach does. Padang Padang Left is the hollow barrel that breaks off the reef on dry-season swell, one of the few Balinese waves surfers can name before they arrive. On the same reef, a right-hander peels back toward the beach entrance, soft enough that surf schools teach on it, which is unusual for the Bukit.
The address reads differently from Bingin. Bingin is a maze of lanes above a staircase, while Padang Padang sits on Jalan Labuan Sait, the road that carries most of the traffic between Bingin and the Uluwatu cliffs. You get shops, cafes and a beach within reach of the same street, along with the noise and day-trip traffic that come with a main road.
Buildable land sits behind the road and along the ridge, so the property is villas and plots in the lanes off Labuan Sait, some with ocean views out over the reef.

Surf & beaches
The barrel that made the name, nicknamed the Balinese Pipeline. A short, thick left over shallow reef, needing solid southwest swell and offshore southeast wind, which means dry season. Experienced surfers only, and it spends plenty of days doing nothing.
The mellow right on the same reef, peeling back toward the beach entrance. Waist to head high on a good day, best on a rising mid to high tide, and the reason surf schools bring learners here. Small takeoff zone, so it gets busy.
A cove a little over 100 m long, white sand between limestone walls, reached through a cleft in the rock and down steep single-file steps. Macaques work the entrance and the parking, so bag your sunglasses and phone before you start down.
The long left running north toward Bingin, about a kilometre of reef in three sections that link up on bigger swells. It takes the overflow when Padang and Bingin are crowded, and you can read the whole thing from the clifftop.
The next cove north, a fast, shallow left for solid intermediates and up, with a village of lanes above it. Close enough to check both spots in one morning.
South along the coast, where the cliff drops into the peninsula's heaviest surf and the beach is reached through a passage under the rock. The reefs here have drawn surfers since the 1970s and set the tone for the whole Bukit.
Eat & drink
The main road through the area and the Bukit's densest run of cafes, restaurants and shops, linking Bingin at the north end to the Uluwatu cliffs at the south. Most of what you need day to day sits along it or just off it.
See & do
The sea temple on the cliff at the southern tip, a short drive down the same road. The Kecak fire dance runs at sunset in the clifftop amphitheatre. The resident macaques here have a well-practised routine with sunglasses.

Who Padang Padang suits
The left is a serious wave over shallow reef, and it's the local option rather than a trip. Impossibles, Bingin and the Uluwatu reefs are all minutes away, so there's almost always something breaking within a short ride in dry season.
The cove is one of the few places on the Bukit where the water inside is manageable and a beginner wave sits on the same reef. The trade-off is the stairs, which rule it out for anyone with knees that object.
Being on Jalan Labuan Sait means shops, food and both ends of the coast are a few minutes away without navigating cliff lanes. If you want silence after dark, look at Bingin's lanes or inland Pecatu instead.
